How often do big meteors hit the Earth?

Record of Historical Meteorites, from University of Arizona, Osiris-Rex program

Background: Meteors are always flashing by Earth in the night sky. Once in a while, a large one makes it through our atmosphere and the meteorite hits the land or ocean. Astronomers keep track of meteor occurrences and their sizes, and use math equations to figure out the force with which they hit (impacted) the Earth.

This graph shows how often meteors of different sizes impact the Earth. It only shows a few meteors – there are lots more – but these are a good sample of the range of sizes.
