Is winter getting colder?

Background: Recently, much of the country was affected by the “Polar Vortex” – a really cold air circulation pattern that brought Arctic cold temperatures to places like Maine and Minnesota. For several days, it was really, really cold – the high temperature of each day stayed below zero! Nights tend to be even colder than the days.

The graph shows how many nights in each year have been below -10°F (minus ten degrees Fahrenheit) from about 1970 through the end of 2013, when the Polar Vortex affected us.
